Jamie Oliver’s Mission to Revolutionise UK School Meals
Dating back to 1906, Britain’s school meal system is one of the oldest in the world. Today, it requires a workforce larger than the Royal Navy and Air Force combined to serve about 5 million meals daily, that equates to an incredible 41 meals per second.
Effectively the UK’s biggest and most important restaurant chain, our school food system shapes what millions of children eat every day. It represents a massive opportunity to nourish our kids, who are the future of our country.
That is why our school food awards celebrate the countless schools going above and beyond to give children the nutritious start they deserve. These schools show exactly what’s possible when passion and dedication meet school dining.
But it’s no secret that not all lunch trays are created equal. That is why Jamie Oliver is on a mission to change the standard. Because every child deserves a healthy school lunch as good as the award-winning ones.
What is Jamie Oliver campaigning for?
Jamie Oliver is campaigning for two major changes to UK school food standards that would make a huge difference right now:
1. Update School Food Standards: Current guidelines are outdated, inconsistently applied, and often go unenforced. This allows the quality of school meals to vary widely, leaving room for commercial pressures to override children’s nutritional needs. We need modern, updated standards for the entire school day, including breakfast. These new rules must reflect current dietary science, tackle today’s child health challenges, and support the everyday realities that schools face.
2. Monitor and Enforce the Rules: Standards alone aren’t enough. Measurement, accountability, and support are what actually drive improvement, because what gets measured gets managed. We need proper monitoring and enforcement to celebrate the schools serving great, healthy school lunches, and to provide vital support to the ones falling short.
